Veronica’s experience with a “Blighted Ovum”

October 30th, 2003 My partner and I weren’t planning on having a baby, but once it became a reality via means of a home pregnancy test. A tentative hope for the new little life we had so unwittingly created had been born along with our knowledge of its creation. Just yesterday I discovered that I have a “blighted ovum”. Not knowing for certain exactly what this is I have been researching the net for all the reputable medical and pregnancy resources. Hoping this may somehow help me understand how this can be prevented, or the cause of it. In doing this research, I discovered that the usual cause is a chromosomal or genetic abnormality. Other resources say that it is some type of chemical pregnancy or a pregnancy with no embryo. I don’t believe the later was true, at least not in my case.

I had three sonograms over a period of three weeks. The first two went from yolk sac alone to at 12 days later showing a 50mm fetal pole. At the final sonogram showing no fetal pole, but some tissue and a yolk sac and gestational sac.

This clearly showed to me that there had in fact been an embryo and that it has stopped developing. It may have been due to chromosomal abnormalities since I am 34 already. But I will not accept the view that there had never been a life there. Before my D&C tomorrow I will let my OB/GYN know that I would like her to please take notice of the our “products of conception”. I would like discuss with her at my follow up appointment about the content of my specific procedure produced.
In any case that’s just what I wanted to share. As my case is updated or I discover any other details, I will post them. Below I made a type of outline that clearly shows that our baby left us sometime in the past 10 days.
